DAFT, Charles Frederick, Snr.
Charles Frederick Daft, Snr. was a traveller for Messrs. Thomas Adams, Ltd. and made frequent trips to Ireland on business. Messrs. Thomas Adams, Ltd were a major lace manufacturing company in Nottingham since the 19th Century, and the Adams building, now restored, is a major architectural feature of the city. Charles’ wife, Alice Maud (née Wallis) had died the previous August and Charles had taken his 25 yr old son, Charles Frederick Jnr., who was also employed by Messrs. Thomas Adams, on his visit to Ireland. The Dafts lived at 28 William Road, West Bridgford, Nottingham. A younger son, Arthur Wallis, had joined the Royal Navy the previous May. The Dafts were very involved in sport and Charles Snr. was a champion hurdle racer at an international level. His son, Charles Jnr. was a proficient batsman, both at school and subsequently. Both were members of the Rushcliffe Freemasons Lodge. Both Charles Snr. and his son are commemorated on the family headstone in Nottingham Church (Rock) Cemetery.
